The name Acanthus was chosen as it refers to a traditional motif found in architecture and picture frames, based on the leaf of a large ornamental plant.
Based in Norwich, Norfolk, Acanthus Gilding & Restoration is keeping alive a tradition which goes back centuries. During the mid 1800's, at the height of the popularity of the Norwich School of Art, the city of Norwich boasted the highest number of carvers and gilders in any English town outside London.
Today, the techniques used have changed very little and traditional materials are still in use. Much of the work undertaken involves sympathetic conservation of antique pieces however, gilding can also be used in contemporary applications.
